More and more parents are choosing cloth diapers for their babies. Often seen as a more environmentally friendly and economical alternative to disposable diapers, they also appeal for their health benefits for little ones. But why choose cloth diapers, what types are there, and how can you easily maintain them?
Why choose washable diapers?
A gesture for the planet
Disposable diapers represent approximately one ton of waste per child until they are potty-trained. By switching to cloth diapers, you significantly reduce your environmental impact. Less waste, less pollution linked to their production and transportation: it's another step towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
Healthier for baby
Unlike disposable diapers, which often contain chemicals (perfumes, bleaching agents), cloth diapers are made with more natural materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, or hemp. This reduces the risk of irritation and allergies.
Economical in the long term
Although the initial investment may seem high, cloth diapers pay for themselves quickly. Over time, they are much less expensive than disposable diapers, especially if they are reused for multiple children or resold secondhand.
The different types of washable diapers
There are several washable diaper systems, each with its own advantages:
Classic diapers + protective pants : Made up of an absorbent layer and a separate waterproof panty, they offer good absorption but require two pieces to put on.
All-in-one diapers (AI1) : Similar to disposable diapers in terms of use, they incorporate an absorbent part and a waterproof part sewn together. Very practical but take longer to dry.
All-in-two diapers (TE2) : The absorbent insert is detachable, allowing for faster drying and easier maintenance.
Hybrid diapers : They can be used with washable or disposable inserts, offering significant flexibility depending on the situation.
How to easily maintain your washable diapers?
Maintaining cloth diapers can seem like a hassle at first, but with proper organization, it quickly becomes a simple routine:
- Storage before washing : after use, the diapers are stored in a bucket or waterproof bag until washing (with or without rinsing depending on preference).
- Washing : a cold rinse cycle to remove urine and residue, followed by a wash at 40-60°C with a suitable detergent (without glycerin or fabric softener, which would clog the fibers).
- Drying : ideally in the open air to preserve the fibers and waterproofing, but an occasional tumble dryer (low temperature) is possible for certain models.
What if I'm not motivated by cloth diapers?
There's no need to feel guilty if cloth diapers aren't for you! Every parent does what's best for them, given their constraints, lifestyle, and preferences. The important thing is that your baby is comfortable, regardless of the diaper choice. If you want to limit your environmental impact without going all-clothes, using eco-friendly disposable diapers or adopting a mixed approach can be a good alternative. Everyone progresses at their own pace, and every little helps!
